The GAL Etna Sud, formally launched in 2016 following the unanimous decision of the mayors of the municipalities of Mascalucia (lead partner), Tremestieri Etneo, San Giovanni La Punta, Camporotondo Etneo and San Pietro Clarenza on March 3rd and officially presented in June 2016, is a public-private partnership committed to the eco-sustainable development of the southern slope of Mount Etna. It operates with the aim of financing new entrepreneurial activities and strengthening existing ones through European funds, in particular measures of the Sicily RDP and LEADER programs, promoting the creation of over seventy start-ups and supporting dozens of local companies. In close collaboration with municipalities, universities, associations, and the third sector, the GAL promotes rural innovation, digitalization, the enhancement of natural and cultural heritage, agritourism, and light tourist infrastructures, with the aim of stimulating youth employment, strengthening territorial identity, and improving the quality of life in the five southern Etna municipalities.
