Park
The Alcantara River Park extends along the course of the Alcantara River, which originates in the Nebrodi Mountains and flows through a picturesque valley before flowing into the Ionian Sea, near Giardini Naxos. The heart of the park is represented by the famous Alcantara Gorges, a volcanic canyon carved over millennia by the river's waters within ancient lava flows, with basalt walls up to 30 meters high and spectacular prismatic shapes. The landscape of the park is diverse, with river environments, lava formations, cultivated areas, and Mediterranean scrubland. It is home to numerous species of native flora and fauna, and the territory is crisscrossed by nature trails, scenic viewpoints, and areas equipped for hiking, trekking, canyoning, and educational activities. In addition to its scenic value, the park preserves a rich cultural heritage, with small rural villages, ancient mills, and archaeological evidence linked to peasant civilization and the Greek and Roman presence in the area.
