The Tindari Way is a pilgrimage route that traverses a picturesque part of northern Sicily, connecting locations rich in history, nature, and spirituality. This trail takes its name from the famous Sanctuary of the Black Madonna of Tindari, located on a promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and offering breathtaking views of the Aeolian Islands. Walking this route immerses you in landscapes of breathtaking beauty, passing through forests, hills, ancient villages, and rugged coastlines.
The route winds through paths immersed in Mediterranean scrub, small villages where time seems to have stood still, archaeological sites that reveal the region's Greek and Roman origins, and sanctuaries that preserve stories of faith and popular devotion. Along the way, the traveler also encounters stretches of coastline with spectacular views, secluded beaches, and lagoons, such as the Laghetti di Marinello, a nature reserve at the foot of the Tindari promontory.
The route is designed for both those seeking a spiritual experience and those who wish to experience Sicily at a slower pace, on foot or by bicycle, coming into direct contact with the locals, their traditions, and their typical cuisine. The journey can be undertaken in multiple stages, each with its own atmosphere, alternating moments of reflection with cultural and naturalistic discoveries. Arriving at the sanctuary, after days of travel, leaves a sense of achievement and wonder, like any true pilgrimage experience.

The first stage of the route starts in Moio Alcantara and ends in Montalbano Elicona, covering about 23 km with a significant ascent. The path begins with a climb towards Malvagna and crosses the enchanting Malabotta Forest, one of Sicily’s most fascinating natural areas. You then reach Pizzo Ralo, with sweeping views of Mount Etna, the Ionian Sea, and the Tyrrhenian coast. The journey continues to the Argimusco plateau, famous for its mysterious megaliths, and concludes in the medieval village of Montalbano Elicona, listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.”
This stage begins in the historic center of Montalbano Elicona and follows an ancient trail through hazelnut groves and woodland, descending towards the small hamlet of Braidi. The path then continues over gentle hills with increasingly wide views: in the distance, the Sanctuary of Tindari comes into sight, and on clear days, the Aeolian Islands. After passing through Scala di Patti and completing the final flat section, the route ends at the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna, the ultimate spiritual destination of the pilgrimage.
The journey ends at the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna, built on the site of Tindari’s ancient acropolis. Inside is a medieval wooden statue of the Madonna, surrounded by legend and revered by pilgrims. The current basilica, majestic and richly decorated, features mosaics and valuable works of sacred art. From its panoramic terrace, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Marinello Lakes and the sea surrounding the headland.
