Nelson Castle in Bronte, also known as the Duchy of Nelson or the Abbey of Santa Maria di Maniace, is a historic complex located on the slopes of Mount Etna, in the area between Bronte and Maniace. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when Queen Margaret of Navarre promoted the construction of a Benedictine abbey in memory of the victory of the Byzantine general George Maniace against the Saracens. In 1799, the site and the large surrounding fiefdom were donated by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon to the English Admiral Horatio Nelson, who from that moment gave the estate its name.
During the 19th century, the complex was transformed into a stately residence by Nelson's heirs and surrounded by a large park. Today, the castle, publicly owned, preserves historic rooms, furnishings, and museum spaces, representing an important example of historical stratification between the medieval and modern eras, immersed in a highly prized natural setting between the Nebrodi Park and Mount Etna.
