Information
Name: Marettimo - relitto dei cannoni
Type: Museums
Classification: Museum type: underwater archaeological, Ownership: regional
Among the most fascinating seabeds of Marettimo is the Relitto dei Cannoni, near Cala Spalmatore, north of Punta Libeccio. Lying a few meters from the coast, at a depth of approximately 15 meters, the site preserves the traces of a vessel that likely sank in the 18th century.
The wreck is particularly interesting for the presence of nine iron cannons, as well as cannonballs, an anchor, and other items belonging to the ship. It is still not possible to determine with certainty which vessel it was: among the hypotheses is that of a pirate brigantine or a Barbary ship. Today, the site offers divers the opportunity to dive in a place where the history of navigation blends with the beauty of Marettimo's underwater landscape, among rocks, seagrass, and a rich marine fauna.
