Information
Name: Museo Whitaker nell'isola di Mozia
Type: Museums
Classification: Museum type: archaeological, Ownership: foundation
The Whitaker Museum, on the island of Motya, houses important artifacts that tell the story of the Phoenician-Punic city and its relationship with the Mediterranean. Housed in Joseph Whitaker's former home, it preserves ceramics, amphorae, everyday objects, architectural elements, and evidence of the ancient population's cults.
The museum completes the visit to the island's archaeological remains, including fortifications, dwellings, necropolises, the Cappiddazzu sanctuary, and the Tophet, one of the most significant sites of Punic Motya. Among the most famous artifacts is the Youth of Motya, a marble statue from the 5th century BC. Together, the museum and archaeological area offer insight into Motya's evolution from a Phoenician settlement to an important center of the Punic world.
