Niscemi

Niscemi, located in the province of Caltanissetta, strategically positioned between the island's southern coast and the mountainous hinterland, has a town center characterized by narrow alleys and ancient churches. The rock-cut tombs, dating back to the Neolithic period, testify to a very ancient human presence. Niscemi was a Greek colony, then a Roman outpost, then a disputed, invaded, and rebuilt territory. With the Normans, a new city was founded, called Nixenum, which later passed to the Branciforte family. It was in the 17th century that Niscemi took on the urban layout that still characterizes it today.

After the 1693 earthquake, which devastated much of eastern Sicily, the town was redesigned according to the urban planning practices of the time.
The historic center is organized around the main square, home to the Mother Church of Santa Maria d'Itria, the Baroque Church of the Addolorata, and the Town Hall. Around here, between the 17th and 18th centuries, other churches were built that marked the religious and civic life: Sant'Antonio da Padova, Maria Santissima della Grazia, the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima del Bosco, and the Church of the Holy Crosses. In the 19th century, Palazzo Branciforte, the oldest surviving civil building, was built.
Today, they are again under threat, not from war or earthquakes, but from a slowly and inexorably advancing landslide: since the end of January 2026, the town center has been affected by a new and larger landslide, leading to the evacuation of over 1,500 residents. The landslide destroyed dozens of buildings and made just as many uninhabitable, forcing the authorities to establish a 150-meter red zone starting from the uncollapsed asphalt areas.
But Niscemi is also nature. The village overlooks one of the last large green areas in central-southern Sicily: the Sughereta, a protected natural area that preserves the remains of a once vast ecosystem. This environmental heritage coexists with the town and today shares the same fragile destiny.
