Settimana Santa di Ragusa

Trapani

Trapani's Holy Week 2025 is confirmed as one of the most intense and popular religious and popular events in Sicily. From the first days of the week before Easter, the city transforms into a space suspended between faith, tradition, and sacred drama. The rites begin on Palm Sunday and continue with daily celebrations involving the faithful, brotherhoods, and craftsmen, in a spiritual crescendo that culminates on Good Friday.

The most anticipated moment is the historic Procession of the Mysteries, which begins on Friday at 2 p.m. from the Church of Purgatory. For nearly twenty-four hours, twenty wooden sculptures, representing scenes from the Passion of Christ, are carried on shoulders through the streets of the city center. Each group is entrusted to a different local craftsman and accompanied by funeral marches performed by bands, in a solemn atmosphere punctuated by the typical swaying movement known as the "annacata."

The days leading up to Good Friday are marked by other smaller but highly evocative processions, such as those dedicated to the Madonna dei Massari and the Madonna della Pietà, which parade at sunset or at night, amidst soft lighting and devotional songs. The entire week is experienced as one great collective ritual, where everyday time seems to slow down to make room for memory, prayer, and emotional participation.

The return of the Mysteries to the church on Saturday morning marks the conclusion of an experience that profoundly engages the entire community, linked to this rite for centuries. Holy Week in Trapani, with its blend of art, devotion, and popular identity, is a moment when the sacred becomes tangible and the entire city becomes a stage, a living memory of a timeless intangible heritage.
