The Artemio Franchi Stadium in Florence is one of the masterpieces of 20th-century engineering and architecture, designed by Pier Luigi Nervi between 1930 and 1932. Constructed entirely of reinforced concrete, it represents a pioneering example of how this material could be used not only for structural strength but also to express elegance and formal lightness. Originally known as the "Giovanni Berta Stadium," then the "Comunale" stadium, it later took the name Artemio Franchi in memory of the famous sports manager.
The facility is located in the Campo di Marte neighborhood and stands out for its innovative concept of spaces and structures: the covered grandstand, devoid of intermediate pillars, is supported by a suspended canopy that demonstrates Nervi's bold design, while the external helical ramp, with its sinuous shape, has become an iconic element of the entire complex.
Over time, exposure to the elements and the aging of the reinforced concrete have necessitated maintenance and restoration work. Today, the stadium, home to Fiorentina's matches and the venue for major sporting and cultural events, is undergoing a major redevelopment project aimed at preserving its historical and architectural value while adapting it to contemporary needs for safety, comfort, and sustainability.
