Piazze storiche della città

Firenze (Firenze), Toscana

Description

The project focuses on the six main squares of Florence's historic center—the heart of the city, testimony to its urban identity and the hub of its social relations—and aims to enhance their safety and livability. The existing city surveillance system will be upgraded to ensure that the operations rooms of the municipal police, the police headquarters, the Carabinieri, the urban mobility department, the civil defense, and the fire department have more accurate tools to visually monitor these spaces. The objective is twofold: on the one hand, to promote better traffic management and, on the other, to ensure greater public order, making the squares safer and therefore more accessible to residents and visitors.
The project was entirely funded by a banking foundation, in accordance with current regulations on incentives for cultural patronage, and the total amount allocated is €100,000. The affected squares include—respectively—Piazza Duomo, Piazza Signoria, Piazza Santo Spirito, Piazza Santa Croce, and Piazza SS. Annunziata and Piazza Santa Maria Novella. It is emphasized that these squares, while distinct in their history and function, share the quality of being the "souls" of the city, public spaces that must be preserved in their vital function and maintained in conditions that continue to offer safety and accessibility.
In short, the project aims to protect and enhance the historic urban heritage, not only in aesthetic or architectural terms, but above all in terms of the daily livability and safety of public spaces.
