The Kolymbethra Garden, located within the evocative setting of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, represents a precious blend of history, archaeology, and nature. This millennia-old site preserves its origins as an ancient natural basin—a "pool" mentioned by Diodorus Siculus—transformed over time into a lush garden of citrus trees and Mediterranean vegetation thanks to meticulous botanical restoration. The park is home to several natural areas: citrus groves, almond groves, olive groves, vegetable gardens, Mediterranean scrub, riparian vegetation, and rock plants that thrive in the valley's porous limestone soil.
The current Art Bonus project aims to ensure extraordinary maintenance of the entire historic garden, ensuring its livability and preserving plant biodiversity. Ongoing work includes the care and pruning of green areas, improving irrigation and water collection systems, preserving dry stone walls, and repairing wooden structures such as bridges and fences. Fundraising is underway, with an estimated budget of approximately €360,000.00, and work has already begun.
The project aims to keep the garden lush and accessible to visitors and volunteers, preserving its ecological balance, enhancing its historical and archaeological context, and ensuring the accessibility of this natural jewel. The funding will help support all the technical activities necessary to keep this heritage of biodiversity and memory alive, ensuring that the garden continues to be an oasis of beauty, culture, and contemplation.
