The project involves the restoration and enhancement of the marble statue of the Madonna del Latte, a 15th-century work from the Gagini school, which will be relocated within the historic medieval cloister of the Church of San Domenico in Palermo. The sculpture, made of white Carrara marble, depicts the Madonna breastfeeding the Child, on a base decorated with angelic figures. The project aims to restore this precious artistic testimony to its proper place, making it once again accessible for both artistic and devotional purposes.
The cloister, dating back to the late 13th century, is one of the most significant architectural elements of the complex, characterized by twisted and smooth columns, decorated capitals, and noble coats of arms. During the restoration work carried out in the 1990s, a previously walled-up space was identified, which lends itself to housing the statue in a setting of great historical and artistic significance.
The project involves several phases: laying a new terracotta floor, restoring the plaster on the walls and vault, renovating the stone elements in the walled space, and installing an electrical system with dedicated lighting, designed to enhance the statue and its surroundings. The Madonna will be placed on a marble chip predella to ensure stability and optimal visibility.
With a total investment of €44,000, already fully funded, the project aims to restore a key piece of Palermo's artistic and religious history, while also strengthening the area's cultural and tourism offerings.
