The project involves the restoration of the Serra Ananassiera, a historic structure located within the Botanical Garden of the University of Palermo, next to its twin. The two greenhouses, originally intended to house and display tropical fruits such as pineapples, were designed to highlight exotic biodiversity and offer visitors rare experiences in the local climate.
The project was born with the goal of revitalizing this greenhouse, currently unusable, and transforming it into one of the Garden's main exhibition areas. Specifically, it will be dedicated to the display of carnivorous plants, species that always arouse great fascination and interest among the public.
The main phases of the project include:
Extraordinary maintenance of the base and central bench, including repair of damaged iron structures and repainting;
Complete restoration of the iron framework: removal of rusted parts, anti-rust treatment, and painting;
Replacement of the glass with compact polycarbonate panels, which are more resistant and durable;
Removal of the deteriorated shade cloth and installation of a new one;
Installation of a lighting system suitable for use at night or in low light conditions;
Removal of the collapsed side benches and the wooden shutters, which are no longer functional.
Upon completion of the work, the greenhouse will be returned to its educational and scientific function, hosting botanical collections and hosting visits, educational activities, and promotion. The restoration, fully funded with €25,000, is currently underway and the work is already nearing completion, with some work already completed and the remaining funds earmarked for the installation of a misting system.
