The project aims to redevelop the Ancient Convent of Santa Teresa of the Discalced Carmelites, now known as the former "Istituto Artigianelle," located in the heart of Palermo's historic Kalsa neighborhood. Built on the ancient sixteenth-century walls and enhanced by the original core dating back to 1581, the complex embodies historical, architectural, and social layers that make it particularly complex and fascinating to explore.
The "booq_bibliofficina di quartiere" project, promoted by the booq cultural association, involves a series of actions aimed at transforming the historic spaces into an inclusive and accessible cultural space: a bibliofficina, a neighborhood cultural center focused on education, culture, and the empowerment of local communities.
The main project lines include:
Installation of a sustainable air conditioning system, without altering the exterior aesthetics;
Improved energy efficiency through new double-glazed windows;
Rationalization of openings to promote natural lighting and accessibility;
Construction of new thresholds and street-facing access points, removing architectural barriers;
Redevelopment of the ground floor, including flooring, arrangement of the flowerbed, and furnishings;
Consolidation and restoration of limestone and stone architectural elements;
Installation of modern external systems: electrical, lighting, and video intercom.
To date, approximately 200 square meters of interior space have been redeveloped: the layout of the spaces has been revised, the systems updated, the ceilings restored, and the historic materials enhanced in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. The project, which has raised €31,000 to date and spent €28,000, is currently underway. This project represents a fundamental step towards combining heritage protection and urban regeneration, contributing to the socio-cultural revitalization of the Kalsa and the public enjoyment of the property.
