The Convent of the Crociferi of Santa Ninfa, located on Via Maqueda in Palermo and built in the 17th century, is a historic building of great importance, located near the famous Quattro Canti. After being abandoned in 2014, when its use as the headquarters of the Central Tax School ceased, the property requires comprehensive restoration to ensure its cultural enjoyment and structural safety.
The project entails extensive renovations of the building, including the complete overhaul of the lighting and plumbing systems, the renovation of the windows and roof, the repainting of the walls, the repair of damaged ceilings, and the resolution of water infiltrations on the upper floors. Also of particular importance is the restoration of the 1707 Baroque statue of San Camillo de Lellis, one of the most important artistic elements of the complex.
The project was implemented through an innovative tool: technical sponsorship, a public-private partnership mechanism that allows a sponsor to cover the costs of the project in exchange for the promotional use of parts of the external building. This model, adopted as part of an urban regeneration program, facilitates the restoration of the property without direct costs to the public purse.
A section of the former Convent will also be dedicated to the Museum of World Cities, a multipurpose space created thanks to the temporary assignment to a cultural institution, which promotes urban culture and intercultural dialogue in a monumental historical context. This project combines architectural protection, cultural enhancement, and civic uses, restoring a place of aggregation and local identity to the community.
