The project involves the restoration of the 17th-century canvas of Saint Michael the Archangel and Saints, attributed to the school of Pietro Novelli. The painting depicts the Madonna and Child, flanked by musician angels, and, in the lower section, Saints Andrew, Michael the Archangel, and Francis. It is likely an altarpiece originally from the church of San Francesco in Petralia Sottana and is considered a notable example of the Madonie Baroque style, due to its stylistic elegance and color rendering.
The restoration involves a series of meticulous and specialized operations: preliminary analyses (photography at various light temperatures, infrared reflectography, ultraviolet fluorescence, stratigraphic analysis), vellum coating, removal from the existing stretcher, lining with natural adhesives, mounting on a new wooden stretcher, vellum removal, cleaning, filling and smoothing of minor gaps, color integration, and finally protective varnish—all operations aimed at ensuring the stability and legibility of the painting.
The total cost of the restoration is €6,600, entirely covered by a donation from the Fondazione Sicilia. The project is currently underway, with fundraising already completed and work in the preliminary stages.
Once completed, the painting will be returned to public view in an appropriate location, contributing to the valorization of the artistic heritage of the Petralia Sottana community and promoting cultural access for residents and visitors.
