The "G. Scovazzo" Municipal Library in Aidone is a vibrant cultural center housed in the former Carmelite convent, named after Minister Gaetano Scovazzo, who donated approximately 8,000 volumes to the entire community in 1868 for the library's foundation. Today, the institution preserves a vast and diverse collection of books, including rare manuscripts, incunabula, and 16th-century editions, as well as significant furnishings and historical relics.
The library plays a central role in the local community: it offers lending and consultation services, organizes cultural events, children's workshops, and projects promoting inclusive reading. It actively collaborates with schools, associations, and educational institutions. Initiatives are planned to engage people with physical or sensory disabilities, as well as awareness programs on the local area's present and historical identity.
The project, currently in the fundraising phase, entitled "The Library, a Community Meeting Place," is expected to cost approximately €2,000. The project focuses on reading as a tool for growth and sharing: it includes workshops accessible to children, the elderly, migrants, and people with sensory disabilities; reviews and opportunities for discussion, such as thematic readings and debates; exhibitions, for example, on the library's ancient collection; and the digitization of key historical texts from the library's book collection.
Updated January 31, 2024, the campaign is in the implementation phase with the collection underway. The goal is to strengthen the library's role as an inclusive and culturally vibrant public space, capable of promoting reading, disseminating knowledge, and preserving historical memory in a context of collective participation.
