The project involves the conservative restoration of several 16th-century choir books housed in the Fardelliana Library in Trapani. These are liturgical manuscripts of extraordinary value, characterized by parchment writing, four-line red musical staves, initials decorated in gold or polychrome, and antique bindings with leather-covered wooden boards. The choir books included in the project include a late 16th-century antiphonary, a "Proprium de tempore" Gradual, and other similar codices, all from the Church of San Domenico in Trapani.
The condition of conservation is considered poor: many pages show damp stains, mold, and widespread browning; there are tears and gaps that largely compromise the legibility of the document; the wooden cover is deteriorated, and the spine and the last cover are largely missing.
The required intervention includes: mechanical and chemical cleaning of the parchment supports; antifungal and anti-humidity treatment; Filling and consolidating torn or missing areas; restoring the color of the decorated initials and miniatures where possible; repairing the binding, including the recovery of the wooden boards, replacing or integrating missing elements, and restoring the leather covering; and final protection to ensure the future preservation of the works in the best possible condition.
The total estimated cost for the restoration of multiple codices is €10,800.00, divided into two separate lots or interventions (one costing approximately €5,600 and the other approximately €5,200). Fundraising is currently open; the project is in the implementation phase and will be ready to begin once funding is secured.
This restoration not only preserves valuable historical, artistic, and musical artefacts, but also allows for greater access to the heritage by scholars and the public: once restored, the choir books can be displayed or consulted in suitable settings, enhancing the Fardelliana Library as a place of culture, memory, and local identity.
