The fountain with the Seahorse sculpture, located at the center of the circular basin in Piazza Lucatelli, is a historic and artistic landmark beloved by the citizens of Trapani. Located in the heart of the historic center and surrounded by trees and flowerbeds, the fountain complements the dramatic façade of Palazzo Lucatelli and the nearby historic buildings of the old hospital area, creating a setting of great architectural and social value.
The fountain is currently in a state of disrepair: the marble horse has suffered serious damage (missing muses, limbs, or tail), the marble is worn, stained, and covered with encrustations and atmospheric deposits. The basin has not been used for some time due to a broken or malfunctioning water system. The surrounding area is neglected, showing signs of abandonment and decay.
The planned works include: construction site preparation, complete surface cleaning (sculpture, basin edges), removal of limescale deposits, sealing of cracks, grouting and micro-grouting, application of a surface protector, repair of the water system, and restoration of the fountain's functionality. Reconstruction of the missing parts of the seahorse statue (muzzle, limbs, tail) where possible, based on photographic documentation or compatible reconstruction technologies.
The project aims not only to restore this work as an artistic asset, but also to restore urban decor to one of the central squares, strengthen the city's historical identity, and provide residents with a welcoming public space. The fountain's restoration can become a tangible sign of care for heritage and collective memory, as well as an attraction for tourism and local culture.
