The Fountain of Saturn is one of Trapani's oldest and most symbolic monuments. Built in 1342 by the Chiaramonte family to celebrate the first aqueduct that brought drinking water to the city walls, the fountain stands next to the Church of Sant'Agostino. During the 18th century, it was enriched with Baroque decorations and the addition of a marble statue of the god Saturn, who in local tradition is venerated as the city's protector.
Today, the fountain shows various signs of deterioration: the Baroque marble basins and the large water collection basin show severely damaged surfaces, covered in limestone encrustations. The stone materials that make up the base and facing require waterproofing due to constant exposure to humidity. The earth-colored plaster behind the statue shows signs of deterioration; furthermore, the runoff of water from the nozzles has created concretions along almost the entire fountain, also damaging the basins' basins.
The project aims to achieve a complete conservative restoration: surface cleaning of all affected materials, removal of encrustations, restoration of the waterproofing of the basins, overhaul of the plumbing systems, landscaping of the surrounding area as a buffer zone, and special attention to restoring the missing or damaged limbs of the statue of Saturn, where possible.
This intervention will not only restore the decorum of one of the city's oldest fountains, but will also strengthen Trapani's sense of historical identity. Restoring the fountain to working order and maintaining it in good condition also enhances a public space, improves the experience of residents and visitors, and promotes the preservation of our shared cultural heritage.
