The historic fountain at the Villetta d'Ercole is one of the most iconic monuments in the city of Noto, located in the picturesque Piazzetta Ercole, within Piazza XVI Maggio. The work was created in 1756 by the Catanian sculptor Orlando, commissioned by a bourgeois family, and is dedicated to the mythological hero Hercules, depicted resting after his famous feat against the Nemean lion. The original composition included a statue of Hercules, figures of cherubs and tritons, and a series of fountains, all carved from fine white Carrara marble. The base, however, was added later and is made of masonry clad in red marble. During the 19th century, the fountain underwent restoration, modifying some elements, while leaving the upper section with the figure of Hercules intact.
Over time, the fountain has suffered various signs of deterioration due to exposure to the elements, inadequate restoration, and lack of regular maintenance. Erosion, biological patinas, spontaneous vegetation, fractures, and missing sections are now visible, as well as a non-functioning hydraulic system. The restoration project aims to provide comprehensive and specialized interventions: from the removal of improper restorations to the chemical and biological cleaning of the surfaces, from the replacement of missing sections to the restoration of the plumbing system, and the application of protective treatments to ensure the future preservation of the asset.
The project aims not only to restore a valuable historical artifact, but also to restore to residents and visitors an identifying element of the urban heritage. The fountain, always accessible to the public, represents a cultural and landscape landmark, and its restoration will contribute to strengthening Noto's image as the capital of the Baroque and the custodian of a thousand-year history.
