Ripristino di quattro campate del chiostro della Caserma Ruggero Settimo – Palermo

Palermo (Palermo), Sicilia

Description

The project involves the restoration of four bays of the cloister of the former Convent of San Francesco di Paola, now the Ruggero Settimo Barracks, located at Piazza San Francesco di Paola 37 in Palermo. Despite significant architectural transformations, the cloister has retained recognizable original elements—such as columns, capitals, and arches—which are nevertheless incorporated into the current wall structure. During interior renovations, highly interesting ancient decorative pictorial fragments were uncovered, subsequently restored by specialists from the Superintendency.
The original project included:
freeing the masonry in four arches of the cloister;
removing the marble slabs covering the original base;
restoring stone elements (bases, columns, capitals, arches);
replacing the existing flooring with authentic Sicilian terracotta;
installing a new lighting system;
closing four arches with glass and steel structures to allow protected visual enjoyment of the original space.
The project protected and enhanced the cloister, returning an important part of the monumental complex to the community. Furthermore, the area is accessible to the public on the first Sunday of every month, allowing for direct experience of the restored space.
