The project involves the reconfiguration of the 15th-century portal of Palazzo Sclafani, now home to the Rosolino Pilo Barracks, with the aim of restoring and returning to the city a stone artifact of great artistic and symbolic value. The original portal, in Catalan Gothic style, was dismantled in the 19th century to be transferred to the Salinas Museum and later returned to the palace's cloister. A project is now proposed to ensure its conservation and visibility, relocating it to an appropriate location and restoring its dignity and original form.
The project involves several phases: cataloging and numbering the stone elements still preserved; reconstruction of the portal in the cloister's northern courtyard; adaptation of the existing opening to accommodate the portal; complete restoration of the stone surfaces; mechanical cleaning, removal of mortar and foreign deposits; consolidation of the ashlars with specific products; interventions to restore the legibility of the decorative details; color treatment to unify the restored surfaces; Finally, the museum conversion, that is, making the restored work accessible and understandable to the public, including through informational tools.
The total estimated amount is €50,000.00, and the fundraising campaign is currently open. To date, no donations have been received or expenses incurred: everything is in the initial phase. The public opening is planned as a transparent event, to enhance the monument's accessibility and promote awareness of the value of cultural heritage among institutions and citizens.
The façade on Piazza San Giovanni Decollato, with its two-tone arches and elegant mullioned windows, is the aesthetic highlight of the building; the restoration aims not only to preserve but to enhance these features, eliminating visible deterioration such as deposits, mortar drips, and discoloration. The project explores the history, aesthetics, and significance of the portal as a testament to medieval architecture and an integral part of Palermo's historic skyline.
