The former San Vito Prison in Agrigento is a building of great historical and symbolic value. Originally a convent in the 16th century, it became a prison in the 19th century and remained in operation until 1996, when it was closed and subsequently abandoned. Today, the building is in a state of disrepair: water infiltration, peeling walls, broken windows, non-existent utilities, and outdoor areas overgrown with wild vegetation.
The maintenance and restoration project aims to restore dignity and functionality to this place, transforming it into a vibrant and usable space for the community. The planned works include: repairing and renovating the electrical and plumbing systems, restoring the restrooms, replacing missing windows, painting and cleaning the interiors, removing waste and invasive plants, as well as strengthening and securing the spaces.
The rebirth of the former prison has not only technical significance, but also cultural and social significance. Returning this building to the city means regenerating a place marked by silence and pain, transforming it into a center of creativity, innovation, and encounter. The intention is to make it a cultural center open to the public, designed to host exhibitions, events, artistic activities, and youth initiatives, thus strengthening the connection between historical memory and new community life.
The total cost of the project is €100,000. The fundraising campaign is open and represents a unique opportunity to contribute to an urban regeneration project that enhances the existing heritage, restores spaces to the city, and creates new opportunities for cultural and social participation.
