The "Former Carabinieri Barracks," now known as the "Caserma Creativa," is a building of ancient origins dating back to 1480, originally built as a convent connected to the Church of San Domenico. After the suppression of religious orders in the 19th century, the property was used as a barracks, a function it retained for many years, until its abandonment.
Today, the building is in critical condition: parts of the roof have collapsed or been damaged, window frames are missing or destroyed, water infiltration, rising damp, damaged interior plasterwork, additions covering original features, and general deterioration that compromises the stability and usability of the property.
The "Caserma Creativa" project involves a comprehensive intervention aimed at restoring the building to its original structure where possible, redefining the interior spaces to accommodate cultural, artistic, and social activities, and ensuring safety, sustainability, and accessibility. The planned works include securing the building, renovating the floors and roof, cleaning and removing excess, restoring the arches and cloister, restoring the monumental staircase, installing or restoring electrical and plumbing systems, replacing window and door frames, and making structural adjustments to ensure stability.
The new interior layout will be redesigned to accommodate a cultural hub: exhibition spaces, creative workshops, community meetings, performances, and activities for young people, residents, and tourists. The aim is also to enhance the still visible historical elements—the cloister, the original architecture, the monumental stairwell, and decorations such as lion heads—as central elements of the architectural and narrative restoration.
With a planned investment of over €3.2 million, the Caserma Creativa represents an ambitious urban regeneration project, aiming not only to restore the architectural heritage but also to create a vibrant, inclusive space capable of animating the local community and strengthening Lentini's cultural identity.
