The project involves the restoration of Scarpa's colored panels in Room IV of the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, located in Palazzo Abatellis, Palermo. The panels were created by the Venetian workshop of Eugenio De Luigi and inserted into the historic exhibition designed by Carlo Scarpa. They are essential decorative elements for modulating the room's light and highlighting the exhibited works, as well as representing an important testimony to 20th-century Italian museography.
The colored stucco surfaces are currently deteriorated: the finish is detached and flaking, with evident stratifications due to past interventions. Some of the layers applied over time, including a more recent one, appear particularly invasive and inconsistent with the original technique. The structure of the panels shows adhesion defects to the support, gaps, and chromatic alterations, compromising the visual harmony of the original exhibition.
The restoration project involves a series of specialized phases: disassembly and handling in a qualified laboratory; mechanical or solvent removal of the final, inappropriate layer; Repairing adhesion defects; filling gaps with compatible materials; restoring the surface to maintain color and texture faithful to the original; and final assembly, reinstatement, and final inspection to ensure aesthetic and functional continuity.
The restoration is not only a technical intervention but also aims to preserve a key aspect of the Gallery's museum identity, recognized as a symbol of Sicilian art history and culture. Thanks to this operation, visitors will be able to enjoy Room IV with restored visual quality, rediscovering the balance between light, color, and form desired by Scarpa and De Luigi. The restoration also contributes to strengthening the conservation of the public museum's heritage, enhancing the aesthetic and educational experience offered to the public.
