The Rectory of Santa Ninfa, also known as the Church of Santa Ninfa dei Crociferi, is a Mannerist-style religious building located on Via Maqueda in the historic center of Palermo. Belonging to the Prefecture, it is entrusted to the Archdiocese. Construction began in 1601, with the laying of the cornerstone in the presence of the founder of the religious order, Camillo De Lellis, and the church is one of the first buildings constructed after the opening of Via Maqueda. The presbytery, built between 1624 and 1649, houses a large oil painting depicting Santa Ninfa together with her patron saints Rosalia, Agata, and Oliva before the Trinity, the Virgin, and Saint Joseph. Behind the altar is an important black jasper sarcophagus belonging to the husband of the benefactress Francesca Perollo, Marchioness of Lucca Sicula.
The planned project involves the restoration of the back altar and the sarcophagus of the Lucchesi Palli family, as well as the niche containing it and the entrance to the crypt where 17th-century architects are believed to be buried. The work will include cleaning, surface consolidation, replacement of missing moldings, restoration of the lateral stuccos, replenishment of colors and gilding, and reconstruction of the wooden mezzanine, integrating new parts where necessary.
Over the years, the Rectory has suffered damage from rising damp and water infiltrations, especially from the roof and neighboring alleys, which have caused deterioration of the stucco. The damaged areas show salt leakage, loss of ornamental parts, and discoloration. The project aims to restore the originality, decorum, and structural stability, restoring the building's artistic integrity and allowing for a better religious and cultural experience.
Restoring this monument means preserving an important chapter in Palermo's Baroque history, enhancing local art, and ensuring the preservation of a property of immense historical and aesthetic value for future generations. The work requested amounts to €90,000, and the fundraising campaign is open.
