News on TRAVELNOSTOP

Erice is a medieval village located on the summit of Mount San Giuliano, known for its historical and landscape setting. The town center is characterized by paved streets, historic buildings, and numerous places of worship that reflect its different historical phases. Among the main points of interest is the Castle of Venus, a Norman fortress built on an earlier site that originally hosted a sanctuary dedicated to fertility-related deities, including Astarte, Aphrodite, and Venus Ericina. From the castle, it is possible to observe the surrounding area, including the coastline, the city of Trapani, and the Egadi Islands. Nearby is the Balio Garden, a green area accessible via a path connecting the castle to the watchtowers known as the Balio Towers, which were part of the medieval defensive system. Another notable building is the Royal Duomo (Mother Church), constructed in the 14th century in the Chiaramonte Gothic style. The structure is accompanied by a separate bell tower, which in the past also served as a lookout point. Local gastronomy includes a variety of traditional desserts, many of which originate from convent production. These include almond-based sweets, mustaccioli, and the so-called Genovesi of Erice, made with shortcrust pastry and custard cream. Erice represents a setting where historical, architectural, and traditional elements coexist, contributing to its cultural identity.
