The Ortigia Film Festival is an annual international cinema festival held on the island of Ortigia in Syracuse, where charming squares, courtyards, and pedestrian streets become open-air movie theaters. Founded in 2009 by the Sa.Li.Ro’ cultural association, it focuses on promoting young and innovative Italian and international cinema. The festival includes three competitive categories – Italian first and second feature films, international documentaries, and foreign short films – along with themed non-competitive sections such as Cinema Women, Cinema & Music, and The Voice of the Sea. Each edition features screenings, filmmaker talks, workshops, masterclasses, and side events that bring together creatives, critics, directors, and audiences. Hosted in UNESCO-listed historic venues, the festival fosters a synergy between culture, tourism, and urban regeneration. A dedicated selection committee and film industry experts award prizes for best film, documentary, and short, alongside an audience choice award. With its unique setting and engaging format, Ortigia Film Festival has become one of the most dynamic and esteemed Mediterranean film events.
