ACQUEDOTTI STORICI

Firenze (Firenze), Toscana

Description

The "Historical Aqueducts" in Florence represent a complex 19th-century hydraulic system, built between 1872 and 1876 based on a design by architect Giuseppe Poggi. These reservoirs, depots, and technical and architectural structures—including the Carraia depot and other reservoirs such as the Pellegrino and La Querce—some sections of which remain functional, while other sections have become testaments to the city's industrial archaeology. Originally, these systems marked the modernization of Florence's water supply, integrating technical functions with a 19th-century architectural style and volumes that interact with the hilly urban landscape.
Today, the structures are in poor condition, and not all are operational: the systems are largely decommissioned. Some sections are located in a garden open to the public and accessible at all times, but their use is partial, and the external architectural features often require restoration and safety measures. An ongoing project involves cleaning and strengthening the stone walls, removing invasive vegetation, replacing missing architectural elements, installing dedicated lighting for the internal caves, and restoring the original fountain. The goal is to restore this historical and technical heritage to the city in a public and valued manner.
