Here is a brief description of the conservative restoration project on the high altar of the Basilica of Santo Spirito in Florence. The high altar, monumental in its architecture and its stone inlay sculptures, embodies a union of architecture, sculpture, and decoration, recognizable by the hands of ancient masters, and represents both an artistic and spiritual focal point within the basilica. Over the centuries, the natural patina of time has diminished the clarity and splendor of the work: accumulation of dust, micro-alterations on the surface, and encrustations have obscured the details and depth of the surfaces.
The project, which will span a three-year period and be divided into three phases, will initially address the ciborium and the interior of the small temple above, including the perforated iron dome, restoring the volumetric and decorative clarity. Subsequently, the second phase will focus on the exterior of the temple and the dome, restoring visual unity and material quality to the exterior as well. Finally, the third phase will include the restoration of the underlying octagon and the wooden choir, elements that complete the altar's scenic system and make the entire compositional "machine" legible.
The aim of this intervention is not only to preserve the integrity of the work, but also to restore its liturgical function and aesthetic appeal to worshippers and visitors, highlighting the quality of the materials and the depth of the original design.
