Lampioni storici – Teatro Selinus

Castelvetrano (Trapani), Sicilia

Description

The two historic street lamps, located on either side of the entrance to the Teatro Selinus, were created in the mid-1930s by the Di Maggio Giovanni Foundry of Palermo based on a municipal design. Only two similar lamps exist in the world, one in Nicosia (EN), making these works rare examples of metalwork artistry.
For over seven decades, the lamps have gracefully illuminated the entrance to the theater and the gate in front, adding decorum to the main square named after Charles of Aragon and Tagliavia, first Prince of Castelvetrano. The bases of the lamps feature typical symbols of the era, such as the fasces, flanked by the city's coat of arms, a palm tree, a detail that makes them authentically representative of the local historical memory.
The best time to appreciate their visual impact is at dusk, when the lamplight stands out among the palm trees, evocatively enhancing the theater's architecture and the surrounding area. This particular atmosphere—often depicted in publications and images—reinforces their aesthetic and cultural importance.
The planned project involved the relocation and functional reactivation of the two street lamps, ensuring their full environmental and historical value. The project, with a total budget of €18,506.40, was fully funded by a private donor, and the fundraising campaign was successfully completed. Restoration work is ongoing, with the aim of protecting and enhancing these important urban and cultural features.
The street lamps, being an integral part of the urban context and located in the historic center, remain constantly accessible to the public, offering the opportunity to admire them at any time, with their enduring evocative value.
